Launch of Rwanda Reads

Monday, July 23, 2012

Last week the initiative Rwanda Reads was launched at a big event at Kigali Institute of Education. The initiative is a 4-year MINEDUC campaign with the aim of spreading a culture of reading in Rwanda.

Several organizations are involved in the initiative, all organizations involved in reading and Drakkar has of course joined in as well. The idea is that over the next four years these organizations will take progress in spreading a culture of reading in the Rwandan community.

The speakers at the launch

At the launch, where the Minister of Education was the guest of honor, several speakers enlightened the audience about the importance of reading especially from an early stage.  After the speeches there was an outdoor exhibition where various organizations involved in reading initiatives presented their projects and activities. Drakkar also had an exhibition of books, which many people showed interest in. The exhibition gave a good picture of what is being done in terms of increasing reading in Rwanda and many very good projects were presented. One of the projects in the initiative is the launch of several mobile libraries all over Rwanda. This project is initiated by EDC and Drakkar has been a major supplier of books to it, and we look forward to follow how it will create access to books all over Rwanda.
